How we research prices
Who runs this site
Fair Home Cost is run by Oleksii Chelbaiev, who owns a small home-improvement business in Washington State. Working with homeowners showed how confusing estimates can be: two written quotes for the same job can differ by thousands of dollars, and online cost guides rarely agree with each other.
This site does not claim hands-on experience in every trade it covers. We are not roofers, plumbers or HVAC technicians. Our job is to collect, compare and explain the price data that is already published, so you know what questions to ask before you sign.
Where the numbers come from
- National cost guides that publish their own survey or project data, such as Angi, HomeGuide and This Old House.
- Government data, for example wage figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Public records, such as permit fee schedules published by cities and counties.
When sources disagree, we show each one with its own figure rather than averaging them into a single number that nobody actually published.
How we keep it current
Every guide shows the date it was last checked. We re-check prices at least once a year and whenever a major source updates its data.
What we don't do
- We don't collect names, phone numbers or addresses. There are no forms on this site.
- We don't accept payment to change a price or a recommendation.
- Our figures are estimates, not quotes. Only a contractor who has seen your home can price your job.
